Born Aurobindo Ghose on August 15, 1872, in Kolkata, India, he later became known as Sri Aurobindo after his spiritual awakening and practice of integral yoga.

Sri Aurobindo's journey as a writer and thinker can be traced through several phases:

  1. Education in the West: Aurobindo was sent to England for his education at an early age. He excelled academically at St. Paul's School and later at King's College, Cambridge. During this time, he developed a deep interest in literature and philosophy, being exposed to Western thinkers and writers.

He played a significant role in the Indian independence movement against British rule. During this period, he became a prolific writer, contributing articles and essays to various publications advocating for Indian independence.

  3. Spiritual Transformation: In 1908, Aurobindo experienced a profound spiritual awakening and turned towards a more introspective and contemplative life. He withdrew from active politics and traveled to Pondicherry, where he devoted himself to spiritual practices.

  4. Integral Yoga and Philosophy: Aurobindo developed the concept of Integral Yoga, which aims at the evolution of human life beyond its current limitations. He wrote extensively on philosophy, spirituality, and the synthesis of Eastern and Western thought. His major works include "The Life Divine" and "The Synthesis of Yoga."
